About e-Resource Guide

e-Resource Guide is a reference shelf for the jobs nobody teaches you at school. How a workplace retirement plan works. What to do when ants find the sugar. Why the brakes squeak on a cold morning. What to check before renting a waste container. How to set up a streaming box without calling a nephew. We collect those questions, work through them carefully and publish the answers as plain, step-by-step articles.

What you will find here

The magazine is organised around the areas of life where small decisions add up:

  • Money and saving. Budgets, everyday savings, borrowing, investing basics and the vocabulary that comes with them, such as our explainer on inflation.
  • Work and business. Pay conversations, marketing for small firms, invoices, cash flow and the online side of running a company.
  • Household. Pests, damp, lighting, moving house and the routine upkeep that keeps a home pleasant.
  • Technology. Streaming devices and internet television, AI tools, file formats and settings menus explained without the marketing.
  • Travel and cars. Cheaper trips, kit for the outdoors, tyres, brakes and insurance questions.
  • Legal basics. The everyday rules that touch ordinary people, described in general terms with a reminder to check local requirements.

How we write

Every article starts from a real question and tries to finish with something you can do. We would rather explain one thing thoroughly than list twenty half-tips. Where a subject has a safety side, such as cleaning chemicals or car maintenance, we say so clearly and early. Where it has a money side, we keep to general information and suggest when a qualified professional is the better source.

Some of our guiding rules:

  • No invented figures. If we cannot point to a dependable source for a number, we leave it out.
  • No pretend expertise. Our writers are curious generalists, not licensed advisers, and we do not claim otherwise.
  • No pressure. We do not push readers toward a product, a provider or a purchase.
  • Older articles get revisited. When rules or technology change, we update what we can and say when a page was last revised.

Who is behind it

A small team writes and edits the magazine under pen names. Each of us looks after a group of subjects, and every piece is read by at least one other person before it goes live. You can meet the group and see how a draft travels from question to published page on Inside the Desk.

What we are not

We are not a bank, a law firm, an insurer, a pest control company or a car garage. Our articles cannot take account of your personal circumstances, and nothing here replaces advice from someone who can look at your situation directly. Think of e-Resource Guide as the friend who has already read the manual and can tell you which pages matter.

Inside a guide

The shape of a typical guide

Whatever the subject, our articles follow a similar pattern, so you always know where to look.

  • Steps in order

Numbered stages you can follow with the problem in front of you, from first look to finished job.

  • Cautions where they count

Notes on chemicals, money risks and local rules sit beside the step they apply to.

  • Plain vocabulary

Jargon is explained the first time it appears, then used consistently.

  • A pointer onward

A short pointer to a related guide on this site when it genuinely helps.
