Before You Dive In
Welcome. The archive here is broad, and the quickest route through it depends on what brought you in. This page offers a few starting points and a couple of tips for getting the most from our guides.
Pick a starting point
"My money needs sorting out"
Begin with the foundations, then add the bigger concepts.
- Managing Your Finances covers budgeting and keeping an eye on spending.
- How to Save Money on Groceries targets the weekly bill you control most directly.
- What Is a 401(k)? explains the retirement plan many employers offer.
"Something in the house needs fixing"
Our household guides are written as checklists you can follow with the problem in front of you. Removing mold from walls and dealing with ants are good examples. Read the safety notes first, every time.
"I'm about to talk money at work"
How to Negotiate Your Salary walks through research, timing and wording. Pair it with the inflation explainer if you want to frame a raise against rising prices.
"The new TV box is still in its packaging"
Our technology section has plenty of setup guides and explainers about streaming devices, all limited to licensed services. The topics overview lists what is there.
"I'm planning a trip on a budget"
Budget Travel Made Simple is the place to start, followed by our pieces on outdoor gear and winter driving.
How to read our guides
- Skim the headings first. Most articles are built so you can jump straight to the step you need.
- Read the caution notes. Safety and "not advice" notes sit near the top for a reason.
- Check the dates. Every article shows when it was published and, if revised, when it last changed.
- Verify figures locally. Rules, limits and prices vary by place and year. Treat any number as a prompt to check the official source.
- Follow the links inside articles. Related guides are linked where they genuinely add something.
What we will never ask of you
No sign-ups, no paywall, no pop-up asking for your email. Read as much or as little as you like. If you want to know how the site treats your data, our data protection statement is short and plain.
